Description

The PHRC has been fielding more and more questions recently about the soils related topics in the IRC. We’re bringing in a local expert, Shad E. Hoover, Ph.D., P.E. of CMT Laboratories, Inc., to help us provide a basic overview of soils issues as they relate to residential construction. The presentation will include geotechnical (soil and rock) related topics that will be accessible to building code officials as well as contractors.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand Pennsylvania soil and bedrock, and the challenges they can pose to residential construction.
  • Identify the importance of pre-construction geotechnical investigations for residential developments and individual structures.
  • Understand the concept of bearing capacity and its relationship to foundation design.
  • Determine how to make responsible decisions in the field and who is qualified to make them.
