PHRC Workshop

PCCA Workshop - Foundation Insulation: From Slab to Walls

Designing building enclosure assemblies for new and existing homes requires knowledge of building science and code compliance, among other factors. What is clear when analyzing below-grade options is that the options are ample and guidance can be conflicting. This session will take a closer look at the slab-on-grade and basement wall insulation assembles. The goal of this discussion is to provide participants with a well-rounded perspective on the options for foundation insulation, but not necessarily an answer for which is the “best” option.

After attending this program, attendees will be able to:

  1. Discuss the fundamental building science principles that impact the performance and durability of foundation insulation assemblies.
  2. Examine code requirements that address the various components of foundation insulation assemblies including thermal insulation, vapor control, and material selection.
  3. Using examples and case studies, analyze the pros and cons of common insulation systems with a focus on performance, constructability, and cost.
  4. Understand the benefits of a well-designed and constructed slab and/or basement insulation system, including occupant comfort and energy efficiency.
